Bird feeders: DIY. and DIY crafts

DSC01820 We made bird feeders the other day using bird seed (obviously), pine cones, peanut butter and pipe cleaners. THOUGH, I must say, if you’re going to use pine cones, don’t use a pipe cleaner to hang it. I thought it would be easier for her little hands to figure out the pipe cleaner vs string and tying a knot but, a squirrel promptly stole the pine cone straight from the cleaner and, alas, we had to go back and make new feeders the next day using an empty toilet paper roll and, pipe cleaners.

DSC01822 DSC01823 DSC01834 Every Thursday we have dinner with our neighbors since we have babies of identical ages and small children close enough in age that they can play and get along pretty okay with one another. This past week we had dinner at our place, and I wanted a craft that both the kids could do- since they’re about 2 years apart, I didn’t want it to be too advanced for Quinn or too boring for Gavin. So, these bird feeders.

Just slap some peanut butter on the pine cone (or toilet paper roll- and if you do the TP roll, be sure you poke two tiny holes towards the top of the roll so you can run a string or pipe cleaner through it to hang!) and then roll it in some poured bird seed- add the string or pipe cleaner at the top to hang- and voila! Easy, peasy. We’ve had creatures coming to nibble for the past week or so, and we’re planning on making more to continue having wildlife outside our windows (living in the suburbs does have it’s downsides).

The kids got along great doing this project together! They were both occupied, loved getting sticky with the peanut butter, and it was interesting enough for both the kids, as I hoped it would be. Anyways. So there’s that!

*I did not picture the chlidren and our neighbors becuase, well, I didn’t ask them if they wanted to be on the blog- but I assure you, they were there with us! You can see the red in Gavin’s shirt and the green of my friend’s arm in a few of the pictures.
