I have seen this idea before, and always thought it was so cool! Since I needed some artwork for my newly remodeled bathroom (future blog), I thought I would give it a try with the Denver skyline using my color scheme (Royal Blues/Lime Greens… unintentionally Sea Hawks colors).
I began by going to Home Depot and “stealing” a BUNCH of paint swatches from one of the displays. Now, I realize that these are free, but I felt like a total criminal! I found myself actually comparing each sample that I picked-up as if I was really deciding which to use… when really, I was taking them all! :) Once I thought I had enough, I stuffed them into my hoodie pouch… probably much more suspiciously than I thought.
I would have liked swatches that were rectangular and had several colors that transitioned vertically. However, this Home Depot only had square versions or solid color swatches. So I took the square ones and used the “strait paper chopper device” (whatever you call those) at the office the next day. I was able to get 3 long rectangular shapes per square swatch.
Once I had my swatches cut, I was able to really start the project. I started with a blank canvas and a YouTube video that I found from an Australian artist on how to paint a sunset with oils or acrylics. Since they are easier to work with, I chose to do this in acrylics. The sunset turned out great!
After painting my sunset, it was time to attach the swatches onto the canvas while creating an outline of the Denver skyline. I started by using Elmer’s standard white school glue. MISTAKE! This ruined the first couple of swatches I tried, and almost ruined my beautiful sunset! Instead, I switched to spray adhesive, which worked great for this!
Word of caution: When reaching for the adhesive to shake before applying, assure it isn’t an open can of Dr. Pepper. PAY ATTENTION! Not fun to clean up! :-/
When creating the skyline, I made sure to get the “cash-register” building, but I “flew by the seat of my pants” (whatever that means) for the rest. It was important for me to show some dimension/depth in this, so I was sure to place smaller cut swatches in front and varied the sizes and colors throughout.
After I let everything dry, I hung it in the bathroom. I even installed a spotlight to give it that much more attention. It looks great in the space!
