We thought today was a Good Friday to start something new. Welcome to High Five Friday! A once a week opportunity to share our Top 5 for a given topic. This week: fabric.
Let’s face it. When you walk into a fabric store, your eye is naturally drawn to the most expensive option available. It’s always the same equation.
The Colors + Pattern + Texture = $$$$
And if you aren’t sewing machine savvy, there is a sometimes extravagant cost to the upholsterer. The sum creates a happy looking home, but a very sad pocketbook.
Here are five easy options for fabric alternatives. All projects are originals by yours truly!
1. Tablecloth If you have the right size pillows already, a $10 tablecloth is an insanely affordable choice for a quick fix! The tablecloth aisle is usually up to speed with trendy patterns, so you can just switch it out with the season. I snagged this one for my European shams from Target.
2. Shower Curtain Great option for dining chairs as some of the fabrics (like this one) have a bit of water resistance for spills! Steer clear of the plastics or you’ll be sliding right off your chair. And that will just weird out your guests.
3. Coffee Bags Sometimes you just need something fun. Recycled coffee bags on chair seats or a pillow make a great conversation piece. As I asked when I first posted these chairs on Facebook… “Will they give you the same caffeine boost as a cup of coffee?” Only one way to find out!
4. Button Down Shirt I have a bucket list life goal to write a book about repurposing men’s shirts. I have a closet full of shirts, a journal of ideas and… that’s it so far. (Stay tuned though.) This was one of my first repurpose projects five years ago. Thrift store tuxedo shirt and a J. Crew shirt I out grew. I’m a fan. {Hint: Use the button closure to stuff the pillow. That way you can sew ALL the way around the pillow before flipping inside out.}
5. Paint It Save on the fabric AND the upholstering. You can’t buy fabric that looks like this. Paint is a cheap fix for ugly. {There are several tutorials online using combinations of watered down chalk-style paint and fabric medium. The right ratio will vary between fabrics, so find what works for you!}
And these are just a few of MANY! Let your imagination run wild. If you can dream it, you can do it. {That goes for fabric and for life, my friends!} Have a killer idea? Tag us in your photos on Facebook and Instagram with #revivaldesignshhi and @revivaldesignshhi. We love hearing from you.
Happy Easter, Everyone!
Until next week,
