Last year when I first got Shellac done I did some research on how/if you could remove Shellac at home and thanks to the amazing tips from Cherry (See her post here) I thankfully have become a pro at it by this stage. I love Shellac but I get bored of it easily and although I have found an amazing place that I get it done for only €10 (more on that later) I never find the time to get back into the salon to get it removed so I need an at home home option.
For this process you will need the following:
– Nail Polish remover containing Acetone (I got mine in Dealz)
– Cotton Pads
– Tin Foil
– Nail File
– Nail Buffer
– Cuticle Oil
– Strengthening Base Coat
One of the main things I learnt from Cherry’s post was that you have to be very light on your nails when doing this as Shellac and Gel polish in general are so strong you have to be careful not to damage your nails in the process of removal.
Step 1:
I first cut my round cotton pads into 4 pieces so they are small enough to just cover the nail but not so much of the cuticle area. Soak the section of cotton wool in the acetone nail polish remover and place on the nail.
Tear out 10 strips of tin foil for the nails. Wrap the nail tightly with tin foil and leave for 10 minutes.
When you remove the tine foil the nail polish should be lifted and ready to remove. I then use a cotton pad soaked with nail polish remover to wipe away the nail polish. Note: You may use a gel scraper at this point to lightly scrap away the polish if you find it is not coming off as easily just be careful.
Use a nail buffer to smooth out and ridges on the nails.
Lash on the nail strengthening base coat. I have been using the same one for years but the minute I stop using it is the exact time my nails break. All hail the Rimmel Nail Nurse.
Step 6:
Pile on the cuticle oil. Shellac does dry out your cuticles and the acetone to remove it doesn’t help so invest in a good cuticle oil and put loads of it on. I use one from China Glaze with Orange oil included and I use it every night when I get into bed.
Step 7:
Apply your new colour of choice. I’m currently loving this OPI beauty.
I will go back to Shellac soon as I do love it but my nails just need a little breather. I get my Shellac done at the Replenish Day Spa at the Rochestown Lodge Hotel in Dun Laoghaire where of a Monday and Friday they only charge €10 for a Shellac application and best of all they are amazing at it.
