Do you remember when you were expecting your first baby? Maybe you were focusing on an unmedicated delivery. Maybe you scheduled a C-section. Maybe you were worried about the impact on your relationship with your partner, or when and how to go back to work, or who would be there to support you in the delivery room. Enter Two Doulas Birth, Glendale mama Becca Gordon’s one stop shop for expecting and new families in the LA area.
Becca’s road from corporate business development to childbirth educator and doula was a long one. She got serious about yoga many years ago, completing her Iyengar teacher training while still working a demanding corporate job, and quickly found her focus in women’s health and fertility, teaching prenatal and postpartum yoga in Memphis, her hometown. She attended births and undertook midwifery assistant training at The Farm, Ina May Gaskin’s famous community of midwives and educators in Tennessee, but ultimately decided the doula role was a better fit for her. She completed doula training in 2009 and began teaching childbirth education classes, which she continued after her husband’s career took the family to LA.
Two Doulas Birth was founded in 2012, selling out from the very first series of childbirth classes. In the past four years, services have expanded to include postpartum doulas, lactation consulting, doula matchmaking, and classes and workshops on topics ranging from the nitty gritty of childbirth to returning to work after maternity leave. Becca strongly believes that each family’s needs are unique, and Two Doulas’ emphasis is on empowering parents with the confidence and information to formulate their own preferences and feel prepared to welcome their babies.
Why Glendale? Becca and her husband, Lee, found a home in Adams Hill when her growing business demanded a dedicated space, and they haven’t looked back since. “We’re within walking distance of four parks, all amazing. My car was damaged in a hit and run on Thanksgiving night and there were two officers at my house within fifteen minutes after I called the non-emergency number. Fresh air, beautiful views, fruit trees in our yard – it’s like a little slice of Tuscany. Our neighborhood elementary school is just down the hill, and it’s a great school with a Spanish immersion program.” She loves that it’s so close to neighboring communities like Eagle Rock and Highland Park but has its own character. “It’s diverse, we know our neighbors, the kids all hang out together… and it’s so reasonable!”
Two Doulas Birth offers a variety of workshops and classes for families transitioning into parenthood and adding to their families, as well as services relating to the time before and after birth. Classes are held in Glendale at Collab&Play and in Atwater Village at The Great Escape Club (both spaces provide for childcare for parents who need it), as well as farther west.
