Breast Hygiene

One is always worried when it comes to breast hygiene and health ! WHO has given us all very specific guidelines for maintaining personal hygiene in the Covid- times and these apply otherwise in daily routine as well !!

In my expert opinion, True hygiene- inside and out- can contribute to true wellness. All mothers should keep basic hygiene factors in mind, not only in their Breastfeeding, baby handling and Food safety practices, but also maintaining a clean body and mind, by practicing clean eating, mindfulness and regular exercise.

All breastfeeding moms should follow good breast hygiene practices on a daily basis.

Breast hygiene can be maintained by cleaning your breasts before and after each feed. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before cleaning your breasts. Sometimes droplets of milk gather under the breasts and can turn fetid. Make sure to wipe off the milk residue with a soft cloth dipped in water.

Nipple care is extremely important too and should become a personal hygiene practice.

Your nipples are very tender in the early days so no need to scrub them or use soap. Just wash them with plain water. Applying hand expressed breastmilk and air drying your nipples helps to keep them soft and free from infection.

Yes, Breastmilk can protect your nipples from infection. It’s truly a cleaning agent for your breasts!

Our good old desi ghee or olive oil helps to keep the nipples moist.

Now your breast size also changes couple of times in your breastfeeding journey. Ensure to keep your breasts well supported by wearing a good nursing bra. It shouldn’t be too loose but definitely ensure it’s not too tight. Avoid underwire bras. If the bra is squeezing the breasts in any way, milk ducts will get blocked and hamper milk flow. On top of that it’s very painful.

Exercises to strengthen your pectoral muscles to be able to hold your baby day and night should become a part of daily practice. Not only it helps in reducing stress, but also increases blood circulation since you sit for hours while breastfeeding.
