Morning Milking

OK so a big part of me being able to be me is the support of a great man. Our now two month old son seemed to nurse non-stop for the first couple of weeks. I was exhausted, on the verge of tears most days and thinking now that I’m older, there is a 15 year gap between this baby and my last, maybe I have powdered milk…..So my wonderful man started looking into it. He did some research and started making me breakfasts that had Galactagogic properties “lactation-producers”. This one is so simple and delicious. To drink he serves me up a nice lil cup of organic black tea with raw local honey. Black tea has been used for ages to increase “let down”. The bonus in this are the Chia seeds. Super little fiber filled easy poop makers they are, which is great after pushing that 14” head out of my nethers. Here’s what he came up with. Please note pretty much everything we cook with is organic and NON GMO so when I say “apple” I mean organic apple and so on.
• 1 cup steel cut oats
• 3-4 cups boiling water
• A dash of pink Himalayan sea salt
Bring the water to a rolling boil. Add the oats and salt. Bring back to boil for about a minute. Reduce heat let these cook together for about 30 minutes over low-medium heat. Take a sample for texture at around 20 minutes add more water if needed. When the oats are soft and the water is all soaked in remove from heat.
• Add 1 tbls of Molasses
• 1 tbls raisins
• 1 small chopped apple
• 1 tsp chia seeds
• 2 tbls almonds –chopped, slivered, however you want them

A breakdown of ingredients:

Oats – beta-glucans, phytochemicals, protein, fiber, and carbohydrates.
Beta-glucans have been found to enhance immune response.
Protein – the RDA suggests lactating women take in 71g a day. That’s almost double from non-lactating.
Carbohydrates – necessary in making lactose.

Molasses – provides iron needed in building blood cells, therefore participates in the oxygenation of the body and mammary glands. And it’s delicious…

Raisins – Fiber. A word of caution, raisins have been thought to increase gassiness in baby due to the fiber content.

Apple – Carbohydrates and fiber. Nursing mama wants to aim for 20g of fiber a day.

Chia seeds – FIBER! And Omegas. I found this info on http://ift.tt/1pr0KdE
A 1 ounce (28 grams) serving of chia seeds contains (1, 2):
Fiber: 11 grams.
Protein: 4 grams.
Fat: 9 grams (5 of which are Omega-3s).
Calcium: 18% of the RDA.
Manganese: 30% of the RDA.
Magnesium: 30% of the RDA.
Phosphorus: 27% of the RDA.
They also contain a decent amount of Zinc, Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Potassium, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin B2.

Almonds – Protein. Thought to increase the creaminess and sweetness of your milk.

Here’s a peek. Obviously it’s working, lil man has doubled his weight since birth in two months being strictly breastfed. I took this and several others because the look on his face when he eats sometimes… “oh, boobs again…”
