Lactation Brownies- an easy recipe for busy families

Lactogenic Chocolate deliciousness!

1 Box of your Favorite Brownie Mix (I used Glutino Brand its Gluten Free!)

1 Egg (2 if you prefer your brownies more cake like)

4 TBSP Brewer’s Yeast (I got mine through my Bulk Frontier order)

2 TBSP Flaxseed meal (Bought the seeds and ground them up in a coffee grinder)

Water/Oil according to brownie mix directions

1 extra TBSP water, or more if needed

Directions:

Combine dry ingredients and then add the oil, egg, and water. Mix until combined and cook according to box directions. I needed to add a bit more water so that it wasn’t a crumbly batter. The water made it smooth. Once the batter was the right consistency, I poured it into a mini muffin pan.  This made them the perfect bite size, and it was easy to freeze them.  I may do this for every client now!
Super simple, quick, and almost “healthy”!

I’m not sure how many you need to eat to see an increase as I am no longer lactating. I can assure you these are absolutely delicious and fudgey.

If you are at the Big Latch On tomorrow, you can have some! Stop by and see me!

Lactation (Booby) Balls

image

Milk, milk, milk… the topic of most conversations in the first 6 months of motherhood. We have too little, too much, Bub’s not feeding well, feeding constantly, mastitis, leaks, the list goes on and on!

SS and I are 11.5 months down the (very difficult) track and although we are doing really well (finally), I wanted to have some lactation treats to ensure and I can continue feeding for a little while longer. These are vegan, dairy free and refined sugar free.

Here is the recipe for my lactation bliss balls!

Ingredients

1 cup Rolled Oats (ground in food processor)
2 Tbsp Brewer’s Yeast
1/4 cup Flaxseed (Linseed)
1/4 cup Coconut Oil
2 Tbsp Maple Syrup
4 Tbsp Raw Cacao

Method
* Ground rolled oats in food processor
* Add Brewer’s Yeast, flaxseed & Raw Cacao and blitz to mix
* Melt Coconut Oil and add to mixture with Maple Syrup
* Using a tablespoon, spoon the mixture in to your hand and squeeze to firm, then roll in to balls.
* Roll balls in shredded coconut, raw cacao nibs or powder, flaxseeds or whatever you please!
* Refrigerate to harden and hold their shape.

Enjoy!
I hope they work for you, comment below and let me know!

Stolen by Dragons (Review)

Stolen by Dragons by Rose Thorne

Length: Short (20 pages)
Genre: Erotic Romance
Series: Yes (1 of 3)
Content: Lactation, BBW, paranormal (dragon shapeshifters)
I enjoyed this short

The quality of writing in this short is excellent from the start, with clear, vivid descriptions. The pacing is good but, as expected for a short, on the quick side. I only noticed one minor typo that was insignificant enough not to pull me out of the scene.

Clarissa Sawyer, 23, is an ordinary nurse who happens to bump into the most handsome and unusual man she’s ever seen: Dante Firestone. The next morning she finds herself alone and naked in an unfamiliar place. Dante is a dragon shapeshifter, and he’s spirited her away to his home dimension to replace his species’ vanished women.

A magic potion leaves Clarissa with milk-swollen breasts, aching to be suckled, and Dante is eager to relieve her. The sex that follows is hot and urgent.

Now, I’m pretty particular about the erotica I read, and there’s usually one or two things in a story that make me pause and raise my eyebrows. While I enjoyed Stolen by Dragons, I had one of those moments when Dante was described as “slobbering all over Clarissa’s gushing cunt”. Maybe I’m picky but slobbering is just not sexy to me… it makes me think of big, drooling dogs. (And this isn’t even a werewolf short- c’mon!)

All in all not a bad read, especially for a short. I’ll be reading the rest of this series.

Do I Really Need to Avoid Those Foods While Breastfeeding?

I recently saw a photo while scrolling through Pinterest explaining foods that cause colic in breastfeed babies and therefore should be completely avoided by the mother. The amount of food that was on the “avoid” list didn’t leave a mother very much to eat. It was a bit upsetting to see this be spread through out the pinterest community and beyond because it simply was not true. So instead of making a statement and outing the people who was handing out the information I took it upon myself to make a blog post discussing this topic that is all too often a concern for new moms who choose to breastfeed.
A mother who feeds her baby formula doesn’t have to worry nearly as much about what she eats because she knows that her baby isn’t going to get any of it. But for breastfeeding mothers within the  first few days postpartum they begin to worry about foods they can and can’t eat and begin scratching certain foods off the menu.  Stop! Stop starving yourself and stop depriving yourself and stop unnecessarily supplementing your baby.

If you’re a new mother, expecting, or have already been through your breastfeeding journey but plan to have more then this information can be extremely helpful. We need to rid of the horribly false belief that a mother has to deprive herself of foods or feed her baby formula because she accidentally ate a “bad” food. You don’t have to starve yourself and you don’t have to supplement in order for you to be able to enjoy your favorite foods. In America you will often hear people comment that you shouldn’t eat spicy food or you’ll have a fussy baby on your hands, but that it just simply not true. in other cultures where spicy food is the norm there is no change in their diet to rid of any spicy foods, although some women might have to, or at least to eat it in moderation to avoid irritation to baby’s stomach. You may also be told by your mother, grandmother, friends, etc. that you shouldn’t eat things such as berries, broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and many more. But the truth, as surprising as it may sound, is that you do not need to avoid any of these foods.Unlike when you were pregnant your baby is now only getting a small fraction of what you consume.

Now, I cannot tell you that if you choose to eat a nice salad full of cauliflower, broccoli, and tomatoes tonight that your baby won’t be affected, but there is a chance that he/she won’t be. It really depends on the baby and what they can tolerate. There will be some babies that can’t tolerate certain foods or only allow you to eat a small portion of it, and there are some babies who it will have no affect on them at all. Watch your baby and watch for signs of gas and irritation and to pinpoint a certain food that may be the culprit avoid that food for a week to allow it to leave both your and your baby’s system and try again. If it once again has caused your baby to become irritated then you may try again a week later with a smaller amount this time. This will let you know specifically what your baby can and cannot tolerate and how much. this way you don’t find yourself avoiding your favorite foods and healthy foods because you have heard horror stories from other mothers. For example, when I brought my son home and everyone knew I was breastfeeding everyone always worried about what I was eating and if it was going to hurt him. I simply ate what I pleased and it rarely ever had any affects on him. Specifically, I was told to avoid onions by my aunt who had to avoid them due to the reaction it caused in my cousin when she was young. Well, low and behold, I decided to try anyway and…. NOTHING! It had absolutely no affect on him whatsoever. I just had to watch what I ate and pinpoint what foods he could tolerate and couldn’t tolerate.

You should know that most babies “outgrow” this irritation and intolerance of foods by 6 months of age because their gut has developed enough to help ward off allergenic reactions, which is why it recommended you wait until 6 months before introducing solids. I will also note that there may be specific situations where you may have to avoid a food(s) temporarily or put off eating that food until later. If you or your spouse have a peanut allergy in your family it is possible that your baby could have as well, therefore you may wait and be cautious when you do decide to eat nuts. If there is no history of a peanut allergy then it may actually help the baby be protected from establishing an allergy. Before it was recommended to avoid peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but that has recently changed. if your baby has ecczema then you may need to avoid (or eat in moderation) soy, wheat, and cow’s milk as these are often culprits to causing eczema to “flare up”.

Some common irritants in babies:

  • eggs
  • cow’s milk
  • chocolate
  • citrus fruit
  • soy and wheat

Boobie Bickies (Lactation Cookies)

Boobie bickies really helped with my supply when I had a sick newborn and could only express, which wasn’t great for my hormone production (oxytocin and prolactin). Eating foods that are galactagogues can increase milk production. At any rate, they are packed full of goodness and they are delicious.

This recipe will make about a bazillion biscuits, but other people will probably eat them too, so I bake  mine in one go (but I have seven people in my household). If you can’t eat 60-odd at once, the dough will freeze. I recommend making it into balls first, so you can bake them as you want more – let the dough balls thaw on your baking tray for a bit before you put them in the oven. They may also need slightly more cooking time – use your baking judgement.

Having two to three of these a day (if you can stop at three) should help boost your supply – the linseed in the LSA, the oats and the yeast are the active ingredients.

Ingredients
4 tablespoons water
4 tablespoons LSA meal (I get mine in the organic/wholefoods section at Woollies)
225g  butter (or margarine)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 heaped tablespoons of brewers yeast (you can get this at most health food shops – you want the powdered kind)
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
1 cup or more chocolate chips (I use the dark chocolate Nestle Melts, because I prefer buttons not chips – but you know what you like).

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
2. Mix together the LSA and water in a small bowl and set it aside for three to five minutes.
3. Meanwhile, cream the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl.
4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well each time.
5. Stir the LSA mixture and add it and the vanilla to your mixing bowl, mixing to combine.
6. Sift the flour, baking soda, yeast and salt into your bowl and mix through.
7. Stir in the oats and chocolate chips.
8. Using two spoons, place dough balls on a lined baking tray (mine are usually about 50c piece-sized, and if I’m using melts, I try to make sure each biscuit has one choc button in it. If I run out of chocolate before I run out of dough, I add extra).
9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, depending on how good your oven is.

Remedies for low milk supply

It pains me to hear of women struggling with breastfeeding a newborn; there is a delicate time window to get the supply adequate for the baby before supplementation is required, which inevitably results in premature weening.

There are multiple remedies for helping to increase milk supply, as there are multiple reasons why milk supply may be inadequate. I like these tips from this old book (published 1983), The Complete Book of Homeopathic Medicine, by Dr M.B.Panos M.D, and Jane Heimlich:
– use Ignatia if emotional stress is likely the causation
– otherwise, use Calc Phos as it is a nutritional tonic

In the case of boosting milk supply, I would suggest the Calc Phos in low potency, such as the Schuessler’s tissue salts.

Other functional foods can also help boost nutrition for building milk, such as oats, and herbal teas (fennel, fenugreek among others). If it were me, I’d use them all!11222966_893365920730013_2637791113811982019_n

5 Ways to boost milk production for breastfeeding mums

A few months ago I was ill and not getting enough sleep to recover. My body took a lot of strain and I ended up having a very low milk supply.

Here are 5 natural ways to boost milk production

blueberries-531209_1920

  1. Oats

Who would have thought that a bowl of oats could increase your supply. Oats high in iron, calcium and fiber, have amazing health benefits lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol and boosting lactation. You can find some tasty oatmeal recipes for the whole family to enjoy here.

water-droplets-619152_1920

2. Water

Drinking 10-12 glasses of water daily is essential for milk production.

schlehe-693935_1920

3. Blackthorn Berry Elixir

This is an amazing tonic for new moms to increase your energy levels, vitality, beats fatigue and increases lactation. During the first few weeks after giving birth was getting less than 2 hours sleep daily. I couldn’t function and my body felt terribly ill. This amazing tonic gave me an instant boost and I really can’t get through my busy day without it! To increase your milk supply you drink Jungle Juice which contains Berry Elixir, I drank this delicious berry mix daily and instantly could see a huge increase in my milk supply.

Jungle Juice

60ml Blackthorn Berry Elixir – can be purchased at your local pharmacy

1 sachet of Blackcurrant Rehydrate

1 litre Apple juice

2 litres of water

10 drops of Rescue remedy – not essential but great to calm mom which increases milk production

fenugreek-fb

4. Fenugreek

Fenugreek can be bought in capsule form from most local pharmacies and is great to increase lactation. I took Fenugreek capsules for 2 weeks and definitely noticed an increase in my milk production.

adorable-21998_1920

5. REST

Your body needs sleep to produce enough hormones to produce milk. Try to take short naps during the day while baby is sleeping. The housework can wait!

I hope this helps many other mommies!
