September Position of The Month: Football Hold

First-Football-Season-for-Baby-1With the start of football season what better position to talk about this month than the football hold?

This position has many benefits and can be a great one to try out for both new breastfeeders as well as experienced mommas.  To start, baby is cradled in moms arms along the side of her body with feet positioned towards her elbow and belly towards moms side.  Mom gently cradles baby’s head in her hand being careful not to apply too much pressure to the top of baby’s head as this can affect a deep latch. Also, be sure to bring baby to the breast as opposed to leaning forward and brining yourself to baby; use pillows to prop your arms and baby to help with this.

Most commonly this position is suggested for moms who have had a cesarean as it takes the pressure of baby off of mom’s incision.  This position can also be great for babies with trouble latching and sucking as it gives mom a great view of the latch and mom has good control of baby’s head.  If you are a mom with flat or inverted nipples give this position a try as it can be a good one for you too!
