It seems quite reasonable to expect that many women (and men too!) know very little about lactation consultants and the whole breastfeeding journey until they become parents. Sometimes the journey into breastfeeding goes well, sometimes there are struggles, and when you are a sleep deprived mom filled with fears, anxiety, joy and tiredness, finding the best person to help you in your journey is important.
What is a lactation consultant? What does it mean to be certified? What are their qualifications?
Wendy Wisner, a blogger for scarymommy.com and IBCLC herself, gave a great little summation of the journey to become a #IBCLC
Read her perspective; “……They (the doulas who help deliver her son) ….were right. When I started my journey to become a lactation consultant, I had to accrue 2,000 hours of one-on-one contact with breastfeeding moms. I had to take college-level coursework in the sciences and complete breastfeeding-specific coursework. Becoming a lactation consultant wasn’t easy, but like breastfeeding my son, it was something I felt called to do…………………….As is the case in any profession, there are always some individuals who don’t do their job with as much kindness or care as they should. But I think this is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to lactation consultants. It’s also important to note that not everyone who gives breastfeeding help is a lactation consultant. There are many tiers of breastfeeding supporters—from breastfeeding volunteers, to lactation counselors (some of whom have taken a weekend course to earn their titles). Lactation professionals who hold the initials “IBCLC” after their titles are board-certified lactation consultants—the ones who had to complete all that training and all those thousands of hours of boobs.”
Learn more about the specifics of the IBCLC Program:
Specifically, I thought it was good to review their “Vision and Mission”
Vision – IBLCE is valued worldwide as the most trusted source for certifying practitioners in lactation and breastfeeding care.
Mission – IBLCE establishes the highest standards in lactation and breastfeeding care worldwide and certifies individuals who meet these standards
That means that there are stringent criteria that need to be upheld in order to be certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. As you IBCLC, I also enroll in continuing education and attend seminars on various topics including tongue-tied as outlined HERE.
What does this mean? For you, as a mom & parent, it means that in choosing a #IBCLC that you can rest assured that you have a fully trained professional helping you every step of the way. Your confidentiality is assured and we will work alongside you.
