Despicable Me Minion Footprints

We have a big minion fan in this house so Izzy was pretty excited when I suggested we make some minion footprints!

I painted Izzy’s foot half yellow and half blue to make the minions body, and Clara’s teeny tiny foot made a perfect purple minion.

They made two pictures and I then painted on the goggles and mouths using acrylic paint. Instead of the G on the yellow minions dungarees, I painted an ‘I’ for Izzy, and a ‘C’ for Clara.

You could make a whole army of minions!

Word Fabric

Every since I read the March issue of Crafts Beautiful magazine, I have been obsessed with a little retro bus pincushion. It’s cute and practical – in other colors and designs, of course. The artist designed it to be mainly orange, which isn’t my thing. One of the things I really loved about it was the inclusion of Frumble UK’s Typography fabric, which try as I might is just not available. I have searched for an alternative and haven’t quite decided if I like any of them enough. I might just make my own through Spoonflower or with a fabric printed sheet – might be too uggg though. In my search for fabric, I have found some excellent examples of typography fabric though:

With visiting my nieces, I didn’t make anything this last week. I started a couple of things, but nothing to show for it yet. However, both of my nieces wanted to attend the Bristol Renaissance faire and dress up! I would have never expected it from the 16-year-old. She further shocked us by asking if she could dress as a gypsy in skirt and all! This is a girl who wants to wear her Vans, blue jeans, and an appropriately modest shirt every day, all day – nothing frilly or girly ever.

DIY Chalk Painting and DIY crafts

We’ve been having a clearout at home recently to make room for new furniture and room renovations. While my parents started to upgrade their rooms, I thought about changing my own room and adding to it through means of “upcycling”- taking an old piece of furniture and making it new.

I got my hands on our old wooden shoe rack and decided I wanted to have a go at redecorating it with chalk paint to give it that vintage distressed look.

I prepped the wood by sanding it down to clean it and smooth the surfaces before painting a white base layer on it

While I let the base layer dry, I made my own chalk paint. I used the most basic “recipe” I could find online, super budget= student friendly. Some searches recommended using plaster of paris, but I found a method which meant I could use materials I already have in the house: paint (I used pink silk) and baking powder.

I mixed (roughly) 2/3 paint with 1/3 baking powder. I think I could have added more baking powder to give it a more chalky appearance (noting for next time!). The paint mixes and becomes thick and fluffy with the more baking powder added.

I painted just one layer of this on and let it dry for 24 hours. The gritty texture can then be sanded down so that the paintwork becomes smooth.

To acheive the distressed look, I sanded various areas to flake the paint off.

And volia! I now have an upcycled vintage style shoe rack for my room :).

I really enjoyed the creativity of this mini-project, and it was a simple and easy introduction into upcycling. As my first time experimenting with painting furniture and making chalk paint, I would note that more baking powder would have given a better paintwork, and more sanding over the paint would provide a more prominent vintage effect. But I am chuffed with the outcome and I shall be logging into Pinterest for more upcycling ideas! x

Day 3: DIY Things are Lies as well as Other Things and DIY crafts

I think any DIY thing on Pinterest or YouTube or any other site should come with a warning that says, “Unless you have the exact type of hair, nail, make up, face shape, supplies as the person demonstrating, you will never make look as good as them.”

After failed attempts at hairstyles that are really impossible without really long hair, yes. This is my conclusion: DIY are meant to make you feel bad about the things you can’t do.

You know what else is really irritating? When you have group project and the other people try to take credit for your work. An example: research group is required to find background information as well as discussion research for our project. I find a lot of them and then my other members have the audacity to try to claim a link for themselves to analyze and present for the class.

First of all, if you want a link, ask me first. I found them, I get first pick. Simple enough right? Apparently not for them. And if you’re going to use the sources I found, you could at least do a good job of them. Seriously.

Pole mod for the Long Ogee Tarp! and DIY crafts

Decided to see how tent pole sections work with the Long Ogee tarp over a hammock!

4 sections of ~21″ tent pole with shock cord; tied to tie outs via Paracord

It looks like the ENO DryFly with doors… only 4 stakes!

Sideways view; I used the green tree straps with hooks for the tarp attachment, and did a truckers hitch on one side to get it taut.

Sorry for little blurry pic, I couldn’t find my mitten hooks or webbing pockets, so I used the paracord sections to tie the pole sections to the tie outs
