DIY: Make Your Own Sugar Scrub and DIY crafts

image003(1)

Sugar scrubs are an easy DIY and can be as simple or complicated as you want. They’re also a great alternative to salt scrubs, which can be slightly irritating to sensitive or acne prone skin. You’ll only need two primary ingredients for your scrub, sugar and oil, and basic tools, a facial exfoliating brush or exfoliating gloves. Let’s take a look at each one and get ready to make your own sugar scrub.

Selecting a Sugar

You’ll want to choose a fine grain sugar for your scrub – the white, granulated bagged sugar that you find in the baking aisle will be perfect. While it may be tempting to choose sugar in the raw or one of the colorful decorative sugars, these granules aren’t fine and smooth enough for your face. If you really want luxury in your sugar scrub, try using extra-fine sugar.

Selecting an Oil

Yes, putting oil on your face is a good thing. It won’t make your face greasy if you choose the right type of oil. This is actually a great option for those with oily skin because like attracts like – so dirt and oil will come right out of your pores. You’ll want to choose oil that mimics your natural protective oil layer (sebum). Olive oil is an easy to find option and works great. If you’re looking to get a little more exotic, try using coconut oil, almond oil, apricot kernel oil, or argan oil.

The Mix

Once you’ve selected your sugar and oil, mix together 1 part oil to 2 parts sugar. The sugar is water-soluble so it won’t dissolve in the oil; however, it may sink to the bottom. Store in an airtight container for 3-5 months. If you notice any discoloration or a funny smell, discard immediately.

Fun Additions to Your Scrub

If you’re looking to make the scrub a little fancier you can add a touch of food coloring, but use the powder color not the liquid. You can also add some additional scent and herbal benefits by adding 5 drops of essential oil to your scrub. Be sure to use essential oils and not fragrance oils, as they may irritate your skin. Also note that for sensitive skin, stay away from peppermint oil, as it may cause irritation.

Using Your Scrub

Gently exfoliate your skin using our facial exfoliating brush or exfoliating gloves. Stir the scrub if the sugar has settled. Apply a generous amount on your dry skin in gentle circular motions. This scrub can be used on your face and body but be careful if applying on your feet – it’s darn slippery! Allow the oils to soak into your skin for at least 5 minutes then rinse in warm water. Don’t use soap afterwards. Pat your skin dry and apply lotion for an extra boost of moisture.
