As I often do when working on projects, I recently visited Bud’s Warehouse which is a non-profit organization that receives building material donations and sells them at a discounted price. As a not-for-profit job-training program , Bud’s Warehouse offers over 20,000 sq. ft. of new and antique home improvement supplies – all donated by area contractors, builders, suppliers, and homeowners and all at savings of up to 70% off retail.
I always find treasures in these places! So when I go in for a certain item, I always take the time to browse around a bit to see if inspiration jumps out at me. Well, what you are about to read is a success story of a time when this actually happened! As I was walking around the warehouse, I stumbled upon these lightly used Fire Extinguisher cases.
What was the first thing I thought of? JACKPOT! These MUST be incorporated as part of the storage in my bathroom remodel project. I bought them all (4), and immediately went home and sketched out my vision…
Before I began working on this project, this is a sketch of what the simple cupboard looked like (sorry I forgot to take a pic… It wasn’t much to look at I promise!)
I began this project by removing the large doors from the old cabinet, which I planned to reuse for other projects. Then I cut a solid piece of melamine board that fit over the full front of the cabinet. From there we carefully measured the spaces needed for the extinguisher installation. Once the holes were cut, I attached the piece of melamine to the outside of the old cabinet. I slipped the cabinets right in our perfectly cut holes and began work on the actual fire extinguisher cases.
Since the cupboard would mostly be white, I wanted to add some color. So I removed the glass from the fire-extinguisher cases, used a Frosting Spray and let it dry completely. Then selected one of my colors from the bathroom’s color scheme an put a light coat on top of the frosted look.
I also attached a small chain from the door of each extinguisher to the inside of the container. This allowed for some extra counter space when the door was open. Its nice when getting ready! :)
I decided not to use all 4 extinguisher cabinets after all, as I would really benefit from a full-length mirror in that room. Therefore, I used some materials I had left over from other projects to put together a simple mirror door that opens to a linens storage space. To paint the door I mixed Polyurethane with simple crafting acrylics (blue and green; separately). I let it dry, sanded it, painted again, let dry, sanded, painted again, let dry and then sanded again. I liked the look of the aged wood in the industrial space. Finally, I cut the mirrors and slipped them right into place (almost as if it was made that way haha!).
The final touches included decorative plants (IKEA) on the top with subtle blue LED lighting that turn-on with the main light switch to the bathroom. I also added a storage area down below by using some of the materials I had left over from the chair-rail we put in (this will be another blog topic).
After I added a mixture of decorative aluminum and wood trim, we finally have personalized storage area within a tiny bathroom that reused materials from previous DIY projects while giving new life to 3 thrown away fire extinguisher cases.
