TRICARE and Breast Pumps 101

One of the most frequently asked questions we see is “how do I get TRICARE to cover my breast pump?” Well, here is what you need to know.

After your TRICARE-authorized physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife writes a prescription that states which type of pump you need (hospital-grade breast pump, manual breast pump, standard electric breast pump), you can purchase a pump anywhere they are sold! This is probably the most convienent option, but you’ll pay out of pocket, need to save the receipt, and submit a claim, and wait for reimbursement.

To avoid having to submit a claim and wait for reimbursement, get your pump through a TRICARE-approved pharmacy, TRICARE-approved pump dealer, or DME (Durable Medical Equipment) provider. All you have to do is hand over your prescription and they hand you a pump with no money out-of-pocket.

To order online, check out Pumping Essentials: http://ift.tt/1zZBJh8. They accept TRICARE and will ship anywhere.

If you don’t want to wait for shipping you can visit Liberty Medical Supplies in Fayetteville. Just show them the prescription and they’ll give you a pump.

Address: 1804 Owen Dr, Fayetteville, NC 28304

The same applies to Breast Pump Supplies as TRICARE covers the following supplies for up to 36 months after the birth event:

Standard power adapters
Tubing and tubing adaptors
Locking rings
Bottles and bottle caps
Shield/splash protectors
Storage bags
TRICARE also covers two breast pump kits per birth event.

NOTE that if you bought a pump on or after December 19, 2014 you can be reimbursed!

Many clients have been happy with the Spectra S2 pump. And don’t forget that up to six individual outpatient lactation counseling sessions are covered as well, so if you think you need help know that it is available when you see a TRICARE authorized provider.
