Pea starch replacing cereals, pregnancy and lactation

During the pregnancy and lactation period, food for any animal species needs to be richer in energy, proteins and digestible, quality ingredients. It is important that pregnant and lactating animal have available concentrated nutrients to transfer first to the fetus and later to the developing litter.

Thingnes et al., 2013, replaced cereals with the pea starch in the lactating sow’s diet.

As a result, sows had a higher average daily, weekly, and total feed consumption during lactation. There was a tendency for a higher backfat loss in the pea group during the first three weeks of lactation, but no difference was found in overall backfat loss between treatments. Dietary treatment did not affect litter performance during lactation.

Use of pea starch resulted in an improved body condition at weaning.

This study showed that pea starch meal can be used as an alternative source of starch in diets for lactating sows. The sows offered the pea diet had the highest feed consumption during lactation.
