Breastfeeding Study

When we hired our lactation consultant, Sharon — she approached me to participate in a breastfeeding study that measured the sucking, swallowing, and breathing of babies whose mothers had nipple pain. I, of course, qualified for that study and from our first visit last week, found out that Blossom was doing a strange sucking thing with her tongue making it click on top of her palate. This led to poor attachment, her tiring out from her feeds, and shredding my nipples.

We had our second visit today, and thankfully Sharon mentioned that the way she was sucking, had improved. She was attaching better, and didn’t seem to be doing that clicking sound as much. On the ultrasound, it had showed that her tongue was moving in an up and downwards motion rather than a wave. Can I just say that she had an amazing feed, and then passed out in a milk drunken stupor. She then proceeded to sleep for several amazing hours (why can’t she do this at night!?!?).

Anyway, I just wanted to write a quick update on how she’s going. Other than struggling to breathe at night, and feed, she’s thriving and putting on weight. She’s really just made up of cheeks. Viviane and Sharon both agree that it looks like her attachment and feeding will improve, and they will get in touch with us about my 24 hour milk production and breast milk analysis. Science FTW!
