Lactation consultants are accredited through the international Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners. IBCLCs adhere to the IBLCE code of Professional Conduct and are required to keep their knowledge skills current.

The main job description of lactation consultants is to promote and support breastfeeding and pumping. Moreover, a lactation consultant should visit every mother whose baby is admitted to the NICU. The aimed is to make sure that every baby get a proper breastfeeding treatment even though, sometimes the baby is not able to go to the breast.

In fact, there are several points that one should remember when they become a lactation consultant:

  • Premature infants need breast milk more than most.
  • Most babies aren’t developmentally ready to nurse until they are 34-35 weeks gestation.
  • Most premature babies will take their first breast milk by feeding tube before they have already developed their feeding skills.

Others job that lactation consultant will encounter are such as follows:

  • Creates a plan for her baby’s feeding.
  • Teaches how to position her infant at the breast in a way that suits them best.
  • Develops a discharge plan for when the family goes home.
  • Trouble-shoots to solve any problem the mother is having initiating her plan.
  • Helps the mother initiate breastfeeding and/or pumping.

All of those job descriptions will certainly feel lighter if you have a heart that loves to nurture a baby and make sure that it gets the right amount of nutrition start from its early days.
