Enjoy the Adventure Ahead

Hello everyone!

It’s been a couple of nights since I’ve posted, and since I’m not somewhere I can put together a challenge card tonight, I thought I’d sit down and share with you one of the cards I’ve made in the past few days (the just for fun kind!) I received another large shipment of SU goodies Wednesday night so I’ve been reveling in those.

Enjoy the Adventure Ahead

Enjoy the Adventure Ahead

This card was so simple, but it’s one of my favorites that I’ve ever made! This time I’ll start with the top layer and work toward the base! It features a stamp from a set I knew was going to become one of my favorites from the moment I first saw it in the catalogue – Life’s Adventure!

The stamp is, as I mentioned, from the stamp set Life’s Adventure (Item #133931 [Wood] | Item #133934 [Clear]). It’s stamped in StazOn jet black ink (Item #101406) and colored in the medium and light shades of the Pumpkin Pie Blendabilities assortment. I cut it into a rectangle and offset it with two other rectangles from the Flowerpot Designer Series Paper pack (Item #133698). These are layered on a Tea Lace Paper Doily (Item #129399).

Next we’ve got the orange/white stripes and the yellow flowery looking paper, which are also both pieces from the Flower Pot DSP pack!

3 2 4

All of this is mounted on a card base in Night of Navy (Item #100867).

My favorite part about this card is that I sat down and I had no sense of direction. I started with the stamp and decided I wanted to try some offset layers – I had no idea what colors I wanted, and I can honestly say that the orange and yellow would normally never have occurred to me. But while I was playing around with the double-sided DSP pages, it just kind of hit me how well the orange and yellow complimented the Night of Navy, and I think the navy polka dots in the first offset rectangle really pulled it all together.

That’s all for tonight! Here’s a sneak peak to a couple of the cards I’ll be sharing in the near future. As always, thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon!

Spring crafting on a cold winter's night

Tonight the girls and I are making this

from the Do Small Things With Love blog. We’ve had a busy week with lots of stuff going on and I thought this would be a nice lazy Friday evening craft. Plus, I finally took the Valentine’s hearts down from the mantle and replaced them with some pretty butterflies that need a nice spring compliment.

I have to admit that I found this on Pinterest so I haven’t checked out the blog yet but after I put the kiddos to bed, I’m definitely going to do that. With a glass of wine.

Happy Friday everyone!

Oregon considers banning most vaccine exemptions

If the bill passes, Oregon would join Mississippi and West Virginia as the only states allowing exemptions solely for medical reasons, and no longer for religious, philosophical or personal reasons. Washington, California, and Vermont are considering similar bills that remove either the personal, religious or philosophical exemptions.

Arts and crafts used as therapy

[anvplayer video=”448370″ /]

(CNN) — Arts and crafts are great pastimes, but they can also be used as forms of therapy. Arts, exercise, even crafting, can calm patients who suffer from depression, chronic pain, even PTSD.

Childhood abuse left artist Heather Johnson looking for any way to numb her pain.

“Initially I went and started seeking self medication,” said Johnson. “I used drugs and alcohol and got very much involved in the counter culture scenes.”

The birth of her daughter prompted Johnson to finally reach out for help. The diagnosis: trauma and massive clinical depression. She sought the help of licensed counselor Clementine Malta-Bey, who specializes in trauma recovery.

“Generally speaking, two sort of biggest effects, biggest damages that trauma has on an individual’s physiological trauma are a profound threat to a person’s sense of safety in the world, and a profound sense of powerlessness,” said Dr. Malta-Bey.

To treat those feelings, Dr. Malta-Bey uses a variety of tactics: talk therapy, and art and creativity.

“If we can occupy those brainwaves doing something like repeating it, repeating a gesture of sewing or brush strokes that kind of thing, then it allows for other states of consciousness, other brainwave states, to become more dominant,” she said.

Research shows repetitive motions involved with arts and crafts actually trigger the reward center in the brain, releasing a chemical called dopamine.

Bedford Sweater Update and DIY crafts

Bedford Sweater | The Knitted

I finished my Bedford sweater! It was such a fun knit and I’m happy to say I love the result. I was so nervous throughout the knitting process. I tried it on as I went and at parts, I was worried it would be too big and at others, I was convinced it was too small, but in the end it is perfect with just the right amount of slouch. I had to reknit part of the sleeve a few times – the first time, the sleeve was big enough for two of my arms with maybe an extra two inches of positive ease. But it was definitely worth it! The body is basically a modified rib, which is nice because there is a lot of wiggle room if you’re concerned about fit. You can block it heavily (which I did) so the body is looser or your can just lightly block it and have the sweater closer fitting.

Bedford Sweater Details | The Knitted

So this just a little update/teaser. I can’t promise that official pictures will be up next week (I have two midterms! I’m falling to pieces with stress) but the week after is a definite possibility.

Recipe journal make over and DIY crafts

I have an awfully boring recipe journal! with a black cover… :(. And since many many months I have been thinking about a make over. Finally I made a rough sketch and gathered the things I needed.

I used:

1. Brown paper

2. Fabric strip, I kept the raw edge on purpose! I wanted a rustic look

3. Heart cut from the same fabric, after all you need to pour out your heart to cook…right?

4. A cloth tag

5. Few strings of wool

6. Few beads

7. Glue, scissors.

20150228-145537.jpg

I won’t post photos of step by step assembly, it’s pretty easy actually! What I did is that I wrapped the brown paper first, then added the fabric pieces i.e. the strip and the heart. I cut the clothing tag into two pieces and used them as a closure for the journal. (Oh yes! I cut out the original binding elastic). For closure, I cut out strings of wool and inserted some beads at the ends. Here, I must mention, the beads which I selected at first didn’t pass through the wool, so I used other beads. I dangled some strings of wool with beads from the spine… they can be used as multiple bookmarks too. I did some doodling for final touch up.

20150228-150516.jpg

I can’t wait to write a new recipe :)

Keep calm…. And cook :)

MWD: Made with dough

Old fisherman

Together with my daughter, who loves making & playing with dough (she can do that for hours on her on little Ikea-table) I made the classic receipe from my youth: 1 cup of salt, 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of water and a teaspoon of oil. I created this old fisherman…..

DIY Reading Journal and DIY crafts

diy reading journal waterstones books and screen blog

If you browse book shops, you’ll notice they often have little reading journals where you can record the books you read or want to read. A few weeks ago I was in Waterstones and I noticed this amazing wrapping paper and I decided to make a reading journal using the paper.

diy reading journal books and screeen blog wordpress waterstones

You will need:

A bookish wrapping paper (I bought this sheet from Waterstones)

A jotter/exercise book (I bought this one from ebay, it was around £1)

A pen

Scissors

A sheet of paper

Glue

DIY reading journal books and screen blog

First you need to cover the jotter, so half the paper so it’s around A3 size and place the jotter in the centre and just fold the paper around it.

diy reading journal books and screen blog

On a sheet of paper, I wrote Reading Journal to glue on to the front cover. You could do it on the computer or you could write something different, maybe your favourite quote.

There you have it, a super easy way to make your very own reading

Fashion Friday: Star Wars Rebels Custom Shoes

Cartoon and geek themed shoes are hard to come by, especially if you’re an adult looking to express your fandom through a good pair of kicks. That’s where a bit of creativity and crafts come in to play!

Meet Gigi! She is a mom of three children and loves crafting, painting, and other various hobbies. She loves clothes and fashion, and given her love for repurposing items, she set up her own shop over at Instagram to sell a range of fashionable products, including custom painted shoes for children. Her recent pairs feature the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and DC superheroes, but the shoes that caught my attention? Her Star Wars Rebels canvas shoes!

star-wars-rebels-custom-shoes-by-shopgigi

(Photo: shopgigi)

She customizes them, and anyone who’s interested can direct message her through Instagram for more information about sizes and prices. The Star Wars Rebels shoes were customized for another Instagram user, but anyone looking to make their own pair can request them from Gigi or you can try to tackle the project on your own!

There are a variety of DIY (do it yourself) tutorials out there, such as Miss Melis’ shoe painting tutorial at deviantART, an alternate tutorial by Toasts, or the instructions laid out by The Chic Manual. If you’re a fangirl looking to start simple with a pair of flats, visit Empress of Dirt. If you’re interested in customizing leather shoes, check out Cecily’s tutorial over at ThePaperCurator.com, where she made a pair of dinosaur shoes for her nephew! There is no limit to the imagination. I look forward to making my own pair of Star Wars shoes in the near future, so have fun customizing your own pair!

How Steer Clear Of Garage Door Accidents and DIY crafts

Prevention: As the saying states, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keeping up with maintenance will keep the tools moving smoothly for a considerably longer period of time. Twice a year, it’s a good idea to tighten all screws, oil all moving parts, check for spring tension and check batteries in the online computer help. It’s also a good idea to touch down the paint annually so that warping and peeling doesn’t occur.

Some additional tips are in order. Make comments have got positive or neutral through the repair minutes. Any criticisms should be reserved to buy a follow-up e-mail or evaluation. Do not glare or stare in the technician. Preface your area work mentioned previously with a press release like “If you don’t mind, I have been fixing something in the other end of the garage. Be happy to work on, and get any question you really have to during begin the process.” Make sure the area is visibly clear leading to a gates repair Union City technician arrives, and clear image. Do not whistle, pop chewing gum or anything of that kind.

The mechanism of a garage door is actually very clear-cut. This applies to two main types of garage avenues. The first type is where the door is really a single solid panel that swings by means of metal records. The second type also rolls up on tracks but does so in sections that follow the tracks up and close to. If you have the connected with metal door that rolls up appropriate large horizontal cylinder on top of the door, this article is not in which you. You need to call a professional. That type of door is hazardous function on regarding proper training and fitness gear.

There are several options in terms of finding a particular local garage door repair Union City person to help fix your doors. One option is going to an area hardware store and explaining the problem, or your opinion the problem may end up being. This can do two things: one, it can help you narrow down what really actually is generally.

The problem could also occur when the lenses in the sensor system is dusty, dirty or if condensation is built up inside of of. For this kind of system it is best to continually clean the lenses.

You likewise ask them the time period of time they’ve got been in the commercial. The longer they exist, more in order that you can believe in them. But don’t just rely inside this aspect. Look into the company presence. If possible, check when they have fresh types of exercise machines and specialist tools. See their vehicle. Also you can ask the assigned handyman to carry out the home improvement job inside your house with questions you think necessary that to have confidence in them.

This may appear a lot to fix a problem an individual rarely think about, but finding the importance repairman for the right price will allow you immeasurably and means that that the work is done well.

DIY fun Magic tricks using Science | and DIY crafts

Fan of Science ? This article is for you :) Scroll down to continue reading & explore the wonderful world of science.

In this article,I will show how to do amazing Science tricks to impress your friends/family if you are doing a magic show xD Sounds a bit childish/funny but still you will be amazed by those colorful inventions :)

1.Unburnable Money

This trick requires a dollar bill, a lighter, some salt, a bowl and some rubbing alcohol, something between 50-70 %

Take the bowl and fill it with the alcohol and place a pinch of salt in there as well.

Take the bill and soak it in the alcohol and light it on fire. Shake off the fire quickly and you will see no damage has been done to the note.

2.Fountain to impress kids

This is an easy project. You’ll get all wet, but as long as you use diet cola you won’t get sticky. Just drop a roll of mentos all at once into a 2-liter bottle of diet cola. The mentos fountain is more spectacular than a baking soda volcano.Kids will think its all magical!

large

3.Invisible Ink

Invisible inks either react with another chemical to become visible or else weaken the structure of the paper so the message appears if you hold it over a heat source

Mix equal parts water and baking soda.

Use a cotton swab, toothpick, or paintbrush to write a message onto white paper, using the baking soda solution as ‘ink’.

Allow the ink to dry.

One way to read the message is to hold the paper up to a heat source, such as a light bulb. The baking soda will cause the writing in the paper to turn brown.

A second method to read the message is to paint over the paper with purple grape juice. The message will appear in a different color.

large

4.Hot ice

You can supercool hot ice or sodium acetate so that it will remain a liquid below its melting point. You can trigger crystallization on command, forming sculptures as the liquid solidifies. The reaction is exothermic so heat is generated by the hot ice.

Sodium acetate or hot ice is an amazing chemical you can prepare yourself from baking soda and vinegar. You can cool a solution of sodium acetate below its melting point and then cause the liquid to crystallize. The crystallization is an exothermic process, so the resulting ice is hot. Solidification occurs so quickly you can form sculptures as you pour the hot ice.

5.Vanishing water

In this science magic trick , you cause some water that you have poured into a cup to magically vanish, as if into thin air. This is one of those science magic tricks that is based on a scientific principle that you don’t tell spectators about, as opposed to being a demonstration of a scientific concept that appears to be a magic trick .

A compound known as sodium polyacrylate, which you can purchase at a hardware store, gardening store or nursery, and is sold as “moisture-saving pellets.” You can also obtain sodium polyacrylate from a disposable baby diaper. Simply tear open a diaper and remove and collect the moisture holding material within.

Sodium polyacrylate acts like a sponge and absorbs moisture. When mixed with water, the compound actually turns into a solid gel. Once the sodium polyacrylate forms a gel, the water is no longer liquid and can’t pour out.

6.Bending Water

Turn on the water so it is falling from the tap in a narrow stream (just a few millimetres across but not droplets).

Run the comb through your hair just as you normally would when brushing it (do this around 10 times)

Slowly move the comb towards the stream of water (without touching it) while watching closely to see what happens.

Scientifically :The static electricity you built up by combing your hair or rubbing it against the balloon attracts the stream of water, bending it towards the comb or balloon like magic!

bendwatercomb

7.Smoking Fingers Trick

Cut out the striker portion of a matchbox from a box of safety matches. Trim off any paper around the striker.

Fold the striker in half, striker-sides facing each other.

Set the folded striker on top of the running cold water faucet or a refrigerated metal pan.

Use a lighter to set fire to the striker. Ignite both ends. Then run the lighter along the length of the folded striker. It won’t burn to ash, which is fine.

Discard the burned striker.

You will see a brown residue that has been deposited along the top of the faucet or metal pan. Run your fingertip along the residue to pick it up.

Slowly rub your finger and thumb together. If you do this in the dark, your fingers will have a greenish glow.

smoking-fingers

8.Magic Milk

Pour whole milk in a pie pan, and allow the milk to warm to room temperature.

Place a few drops of different colored food coloring into the pan of milk.

Next, place a few drops of liquid dish soap into the pan of milk.

Watch what happens.

The soap breaks down the fat in the milk and causes the food coloring to swirl and make some really neat designs.

Do you guys want a part 2 ? Let me know :D

Photo Friday

Hello everyone! We still have lots of cold and snow and wind outside, but I think an end just might be creeping into sight. The temperatures this week have seemed just a teensy bit higher and we’ve managed to get outside to play a couple of times, and next weeks it looks like things will be warming up just a bit more. I’m sure we still have plenty more cold days and snow storms headed our way, but soon enough spring will arrive with melting snow, mud puddles, and eventually even some flowers poking their way up. In the mean time, Lewis is still loving the snow, except when the wind blows too cold in his face.

Starting things off right with a blurry photo. We brought Daddy to the MiSci museum last weekend to see the butterflies and other exhibits, but I forgot my camera and only took two photos on my phone while we were there.

Once the ice cube tray was full to overflowing I told him we wouldn't add any more ingredients, so he started transferring everything to the cookie sheet instead. He started by pouring all the vinegar in, then carefully scooped the "sludge" as he called it and dribbled it into the pan as well. Fun!

Our newest, and messiest ever, sensory bin material: shredded paper. My mess catcher sheet proved absolutely useless and there were bits of paper covering every bit of living room carpet and also spread into every other room of the house. We got to do a fun activity called "vacuuming" once he was done playing.

Immediately following clean-up of the paper disaster, Lewis told me he needed a squiggly line path on the carpet going all the way to the other room. We usually use washi tape or masking tape for this, but discovered that yarn actually works very well and can more easily reach long distances through the house. He had fun driving his car, running, and chasing Mommy and Daddy on his zig-zag path.

Lewis' first sewing project! He saw me use my sewing machine yesterday and this morning was pretending to use a toy barn as his own sewing machine, so I got out some plastic canvas and yarn needles and showed him how he could really do some stitching of his own.
