Our Essex beach between St Osyth and Clacton is empty without the summer tourists, so we can wander along freely.
Lola snuffles at the smells of the seaweed and grassy dunes, while I gather thoughts for my writing.
I also enjoy beach-combing – collecting odd pieces of sea-glass or driftwood.
I’ve been waiting for inspiration on how to make use of or ‘upcycle’ my free finds – and now the creative juices are bubbling with a few ideas, starting with turning the odd bits of driftwood into decorative pieces for the home.
Being an avid crafter, particularly with textiles, I’ve acquired a variety of equipment and source materials, including fine combed wool fibres, barbed needles and special foam block for needle felting.
And with my love of birds I’ve started felting fantastic birds in bright and quirky colours (do you think the one red one is a bit more like a mouse than a bird?)
They’re on wire legs, all the better to ‘perch’ on bits of driftwood (so they won’t live in sherry glasses for ever!)
I need to drill some very fine holes to secure the wire legs into the driftwood (this one isn’t properly attached yet)
So it’s very much work in progress – something to occupy me in between my writing projects, reading and other work – and my walks with Lola. Cue for one last dog photo of Lola on the beach.
Still unsure what to do with the sea-glass, but watch this space . . .
