Valentines Day Superstitions

On our last adventure to the library, Button and I discovered a book called “Valentine Crafts and Cookbook” by Gardner Quinn, and Illustrations by Madeline Grossman.BOOK

This little book was published in 1977, and while it’s only 46 pages long, it’s full of different creative activities for the whole family!

I originally checked this book out to try a few of the recipes they have compiled for the holiday, but was much more interested in the Valentines Day Superstitions and Customs page.

I personally always enjoyed Valentine’s Day. Albeit was mostly because of the chocolate and pretty cards. I was never really interested in the traditions or customs of the holiday (except maybe when I participated in school). This little gem is great for sharing the story and activities of Valentine’s day with your kids.

The following is a list of superstitions from Valentines Crafts and Cookbooks ~ 1977

“If you are a girl, the first boy you see on Valentine’s Day is destined to become your husband.”

“If you are a boy, the first girl you see on February 14th will become your wife.”

And if those aren’t cheesy enough for you…

“If a girl sees a robin, she will marry a sailor.”

“If she sees a sparrow, she will marry a poor man, but she will be happy.”

“Spotting a goldfinch means she will marry a millionaire”

“A flock of doves indicates good fortune in a marriage.”

“Seeing a white dove fly overhead is a sign of good luck.”

and

“Dreaming about a dove is said to be a promise of happiness.”

Another interesting custom that I had never heard of was the tradition of men giving their sweeties a pair of gloves on February 14th. This was done to represent the idea of asking for their hand in marriage.

So now I’m curious, do you have any unusual traditions/customs in your family? Share them in the comments below!
