Hey there!
Today I am going to show you a great way to recycle plastic bottles… You don’t have to throw them away!
Using a bottle and an extra lid (of the same kind as the one from the bottle), you can make small containers – for food, spices, cosmetics, or whatever else you want to put in there. I use them for (homemade!) lip balm or lotion, because they have just the right size for travelling and you can wash and reuse them.
They are super easy to make, but the process involves cutting plastic… so please let an adult do this, and immediately dispose of the sharp plastic scraps if you have younger children at home!
However, I have to say that I am no “adult” either, and I have never hurt myself making these containers. Just take care, it’s better being safe than sorry.
So, let’s get started! Go get a bottle, an extra cap, and scissors – what are you waiting for?
Use sharp scissors or a cutter to chop off the upper part of the bottle.
Then, you’re going to want to make an even cut, very close to the cap, and sand or file it to avoid cutting your fingers.
Now fit the cap on the cut edge you just made.
This step is a bit tricky, you might have to cut the edge closer a few times until it fits perfectly. Use some force, it should be very tight… to avoid spills later on.
It should look like this when you're done...
Et voilà! That’s it! Now you can use another lid to close your container. Awesome? Hell yeah! And so easy, too. Maybe a 3 or 4 on a difficulty scale from 1 to 10. And so, so useful. I can’t remember where I first saw this idea, it was a long time ago, but if you browse the web you will find similar tutorials.
However, most of them glue the cut edge to a sheet of plastic – and me being a bit of a health fanatic, I just wouldn’t want possibly toxic glue on a container I use for cosmetics. So I had this idea with the 2 bottle caps instead, and it has worked very well. I hope you like it as much as I do!
