so – stay with me here a moment!
there have been a lot of changes in my life that have given me a LOT more control over my life – and the products in it. now, it would take a dissertation to explain why this is – so just go with it. when i moved into my house, i decided two things (well, a lot of things – but for this post, we’ll just focus on two):
- minimizing allergens
- minimizing chemicals
so, i like to breathe – but i don’t get to all that often. so, my goal is to minimize typical allergens – regardless if i am allergic to them or not. first thing that went? the kitty liter – so happy to be able to scoop the poop and not feel like scratching my lungs right out of my chest. the second thing is that i want to reduce exposure to unneeded chemicals. enter – diy products.
i started simply – toothpaste. i ran across a recipe through a blog called trash is for tosser (and yes, i am also working to minimize my creation of trash – though i don’t anticipate being quite a adept at it as she is – at least not yet – but i am making strides).
the reason i chose to start with toothpaste is mostly because i am tired of the burning sensation that appears on my tongue after using store bought. not to mention the fact that you can’t really eat or drink anything for awhile after brushing your teeth with that crap. (ever brushed your teeth and then immediately drank oj…?) so i did some research and found that recipe – and i gave it a try. it’s super simple:
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons baking soda
- 25-30 drops food grade peppermint essential oil
- mix together and store in sealed jar (fits nicely into a four ounce ball jar)
i will say this – it takes some getting used to the taste – though the peppermint oil helps (make sure it is food grade!!) but – i love it. for one, baking soda is FAR less abrasive on the teeth – but it gets the job done. bonus – the taste doesn’t linger – so you can jump right in with the oj and be totally fine.
