So a couple of days ago I found this fab DIY dress on The Felted Fox’s blog which I fell in love with. Love the drapey feel and how comfortable and versatile it looked. Actually if I had only seen the shop window version (which she copied the pattern from) I wouldn’t have been that inspired, but her version looked gorgeous… so I had to have my own.
I’ve had various jersey material sat around in my fabric stash for a while so thought this would be the perfect project to finally use some of it up. I initially thought I would do it in a gorgeous vibrant purple jersey, however as the skirt is gathered it takes a fair amount of fabric so I didn’t have enough. Hmm…maybe I wouldn’t be able to do any fabric stash-busting after all, and I do love a good excuse to go fabric shopping… But then my sensible part of my brain said to me ‘well why does it have to be all in one colour?’ I also had in my stash a nice lightweight black jersey with little patterned squares in the knit, and so decided to go for a purple skirt with a black top. I think the purple on its own might have ended up a bit dressy looking for day to day wear anyway so this was probably a better option.
The dress is super easy to make up, being only made from 2 pattern pieces and not being hemmed, so can be whipped up in only a few hours. This was great for me as I am typically good at starting sewing projects which never get finished!
I adore the finished product and its so comfortable and easy to wear. I already have plans to make this up in various different fabrics. I’m thinking a stretch velvet would be gorgeous for the skirt (I think in my head I’m picturing Chinelo’s gorgeous purple velvet dress she made on the Great British Sewing Bee) but not sure what I would do for the top. Or maybe even trying the skirt in a light drapey woven fabric, although the top would need changing for this.
Anyway – watch this space!! Any comments or ideas for the next project are welcome :)
