I rise, surely as spring follows winter

Wow! Talk about a long absence, eh?

Most years, as soon as Daylight Savings hits in the fall, my whole body just wants to go into hibernation mode. Time slows down for me. I want to sleep all the time. And, not to mention, I suffer from bouts of clinical depression every now and again. Combine all of these with my job deciding to make me its punching bag, and, well. All I do for months is sleep, eat, work, and scream at uncooperative blenders. Not very fun.

It was a long hard slog to dig myself out of winter’s trench. That’s just how it is – there is no magical morning where you wake up and suddenly everything is better. I’ve been slowly making adjustments to my life and trying to outline my goals and plot how I’ll get there.

Along the way, I cast on for a modest pair of green socks.

Embossed Leaves. Again. Out of Dream in Color Smooshy, colorway Happy Forest.

I so loved these when I first knit them in the summertime that I decided it was time to make a pair for myself. They’re so green! So leafy! So… opposite of what’s outside my window right now. They embody exactly the hope I have for my future – bright and beautiful, yet functional. They’re very wonderful and fit perfectly.

I’ve been knitting for seven years now, and somehow every so often I forget how much I love to knit. And I don’t knit… sometimes for months at a time. Returning to my yarn stash is always something like coming home to your lover after a long absence away.

Knitting holds a lot of lessons for me. Such as: you should (mostly) finish what you start. That good things come to those who wait. Know when to abandon a disaster when you see it. Slow and steady wins the race. Beautiful things require hard work and lots of effort. And, most importantly, it’s all worth it in the end. These are all ideas that I try to keep in mind as I grow and really step over the threshold into true adulthood. I’m naturally an impatient and fickle person. Knitting helps temper that for me.

So here’s to new horizons, hard work, and beautiful yarn.
