Once we finished building our new closets, the next thing on the to-do list was to get rid of the old ones. From start to finish, it took us 6 weekends- we started working at the end of January and finished in mid-March.
We spent the first weekend removing the doors, trim, and the middle wall, and then pulling out some of the cedar lining to see what we were working with. Surprisingly, there wasn’t any drywall behind the cedar- the boards were nailed directly over the insulation. Not totally sure if this is a problem or not- seems like it is kind of sketchy (and flammable)- but it’s a moot point now as we’ve ripped it out and replaced it all with drywall.
Then came the fun part. We grabbed our prybars and went to town on the cedar! It was slow going, taking up an entire weekend, as the cedar covered the back, sides, and ceiling of both closets, but it was also kind of therapeutic.
We replaced the old insulation with some stuff we had left over from our bathroom project, built a frame for a soffit, added recessed lights, and began putting up drywall.
Then came a few weekends of “wall” stuff- plastering, sanding, patching, priming, and painting.
And here it is in its (mostly) finished state! (Our dog seems to approve, as the bed is currently her favorite spot in the entire house).
It’s still a work in progress, as we still need to deal with baseboards and trim and patch/refinish the floors, but that’s going to be part of a larger (non-DIY) renovation that we’ve actually just started on this week. Stay tuned :)
