Studio furniture - Rack on wheels and DIY crafts

This time I have gone into the DIY furniture building. This has resulted in a rack for 19″ outboard studio equipment, on wheels.

image

The wood cut out and first impression of how the final result will be.

image

The rack have been put together without the use of screws, but glued together. Therefore holes for glue and sticks must be drilled. Notice the Piet Hein work table.

image

The rack mounts. 6U on both upper and lower section.

image

Rack mounts mounted. Looks good!

image

image

And now fitted in the studio with some of the gear. Always keep room for expansion!

I am very happy with the final result. A little crooked and some gaps are too big but it’s okay, it is the first build!!

Project 1 and DIY crafts

In July 2013 I bought a cork board map of the world with the plan to mount it on a board and fill it with photos of places I’d been. After 18 months of thinking about how to mount it I finally got my act together and went to the local DIY shop to buy the materials and spent 2 weekends putting it together. I decided to document the creation process with photos and these are some of my favourites. There are only a few photos on the board at the moment, but I will continue to build it up with photos of places I’ve been and places I go to.

Technology to Transform Our Lives at KBIS 2015

Brandy Souza of Kitchen Views

The KBIS show of 2015 was filled with plenty of brands we know and love. All our favorite brands have clearly embraced new technology and used it to make our lives easier. The one take away from this year’s Kitchen and Bath show was that technology is king. Here are my notes from the KBIS 2015 show that demonstrate how technology, design and function come together to better our lives.

Bobble edged bunting.

I said the other day that I was addicted to crocheted bobble edging and I have edged all my crochet bunting flags that way. Well today I started on the fabric flags and have found out how to add a crochet edge to fabric. I have used the same wool that I used for the crocheted bunting flags which is probably not what you’re supposed to do but I’m just a newbie when it comes to crocheting so I’ll plead ignorance!

First I blanket stitched all the way around, which gave me something to start crocheting onto.

IMG_0264

Then I did a simple foundation row of crochet all the way around the flag which would give a nice base to the bobble edging.

IMG_0265

Lastly I went right around the edge crocheting the bobbles until I had finished the flag.

IMG_0266

I don’t know the technical names of the stitches I did but I’ll consult the books Mum and Dad got me for Christmas and if I can identify what I did then I’ll try and give you a sort of pattern description.

Now for the other flags…………..all 119 of them! Told you it will be a labour of love, I think I’ll investigate crocheting with thread rather than wool as it may be a lot quicker and easier! :) x

Granny Square Rag Rug

About six months ago, my mom’s favorite woven rug bit the dust. She was sad, and so I determined to make her a rug that had a similar feel under her feet. So, I went searching on Amazon and found this Rag Rugs crochet book. I had her pick one that she liked, and then I went about matching it to the colors of her bathroom: light blue and dark brown. She really likes chevron stripes, so I got a chevron stripe that mixed both colors and a solid light blue, and a solid dark brown fabric, all in cotton. From here, it was quite a process.

I had to decide how I was going to make the rug look, more ragged or clean cut. I chose ragged, which means ripping the fabric. I used a rotary and nicked the beginning of each strip of fabric at 2 1/4 inches, then ripped them all. From there, you have to sew them together. I used the same technique that I use when I am making a quilt binding and sewing strips together, so it went quickly, but it was still a lot of fabric. And it goes fast when you’re crocheting it.

Things I’ll say about the crocheting:

It wasn’t difficult in stitches or pattern; it was hard on my hands. If you have arthritis of any sort in your hands, you’ll find yourself needing to take more breaks than you might for a regular project. The fabric is just a tough thing to crochet with in the size of strips needed. Keeping the patterned fabric folded correctly so you can see the chevron stripes is trickier than expected, and means that you have to pay extra attention so the wrong side of the fabric doesn’t show on your rug too much. It can’t be avoided all together, but if you work to make sure you’re keeping the print visible as often as possible, it helps.

Things I’ll say about the pattern:

The pattern was very clear and easy to read and understand. It was helpful to have the diagram to piece the thing together after I’d created the granny square strips.

The fabric measurements were off by about a half a yard. If you buy this book, remember to buy a half a yard more (at least . . . I bought a yard because I didn’t know how far off the measurements were. It’s hard to tell when you’ve never worked with crocheting fabric before) than the book calls for. My rug was to the exact measurements and gauge specified in the book, so I know it wasn’t my crocheting; it is that the measurements for fabric needs are off.

Without further ado, the finished product!

IMG_4444

IMG_4445

The rug isn’t perfectly rectangular, and it has some ends that occasionally find their way unwoven out of the project, but my mom loves it, and rugs are supposed to be unique anyway, right? Overall, after I’ve forgotten the pain of having to create my own long yarn strips, I’ll probably make another one of these, just a different pattern.

Achievement Unlocked! and DIY crafts

After displaying my slightly embarassing pics of the packages I’ve received over the holidays….I did try to be constructive with the loot I’ve received. Mostly to keep track of what I have in order to work on my first build of the new year….which I’m pretty excited to do.

Yes, I still have the CC. Seriously, the whole egg carton into bricks is making me cringe. I’m still working on Dasha and Lena’s home, so please don’t yell at me. I haven’t forgotten it. But BK got me something over the holidays that’s making me dance in pure excitement.

Hah! I wish!

So most of you know that after building the ARC II, I ended up giving it to my mother to enjoy. And despite that generous gesture….I was missing that house. My dining room felt empty without it. I guess BK picked up on my mood because on Christmas Day, he actually got me another ARC dollhouse kit from the ever talented team at 3StarStudios. My in-laws were definitely surprised at my reaction given I almost tackled my husband to the ground and gave him numerous hugs & kisses.

The ARC Dollhouse. Image used with permission by 3 Star Studio.

The ARC Dollhouse.

Image used with permission by 3 Star Studio.

Of course, the challenge was that I had to wait until BK and I returned home to do any work on the (yeah, I know not imaginative) ARC III. But in the meantime….I went online and began to order my supplies. Which all arrived (luckily) a week after I’ve opened the packages that were held during our absence.

So now I’m ready…so ready to get to work! I have a plan…and I want to see if I can make it a reality!

Oh sweet mother, I hope it doesn’t come to this!

Dealing With Going Back To School (Especially The First Day) and DIY crafts

Note: If you don’t live in Australia or aren’t familiar with the Australian education system, you will be thoroughly confused.

images-11

Well, the new school year began earlier this week and I know that for most people, including me, going back to school is a major struggle. It may or may not be due to the fact that I’m very unproductive in the holidays and forget what life outside my room is. I usually spend my holidays on my laptop, sitting in my room, trying to beat the heat. But then, those six short weeks known as school holidays suddenly come to an end, and next thing I know, I’m getting ready for another year back at prison, aka school (actually it’s not that bad, I just exaggerate a lot). And the first day is always the most difficult.

Personally, I find it very hard to deal with the first day back at school because in the summer holidays, everything is messed up; my brain, my room, my sleeping schedule and just me, in general, are all dysfunctional. But around a week before the first day of school, I was browsing through Instagram and I found these pretty useful tips about dealing with the first day of school. Since they worked pretty well for me, I thought, “why not share these great tips!” and now here I am writing this. Hopefully you enjoy reading it and it gives you some advice about dealing with the first day back at school.

tumblr_mkzbwnTRyy1raio19o1_500

1) Pretend it’s just another school day.

Don’t think too much about the fact that you have school tomorrow for the first time after six weeks; just act is if it’s another regular school day and it’ll be easier to cope with the overwhelming feeling of sitting and doing work for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.

9d7bb62a2118bcad606ab9e741ab49fe

2) Prepare everything the night before.

On the night before your first day back, make sure to pack your backpack with all essential school supplies that you’ll require (in my case – pens, highlighters, laptop, notebooks, calculator, wallet, tissues, gum and a yearly planner in a diary format). Also, keep your uniform in an easily accessible area and make sure it’s clean and ironed (my school’s very strict about uniform so I have to take a lot of care in making sure that my shoes and dress are all in perfect condition -_-) Just make sure that you’re fully prepared with all essential items for school. Forgetting something important on the first day is pretty horrible so don’t let that happen to you.

3) Try to adapt to your regular sleeping schedule beforehand.

Around a week before school starts, try sleeping on time and waking up early so your body and adapt to your regular sleeping schedule instead of just suddenly changing your sleeping schedule so drastically. If you do this, you can ease yourself into such a major change and won’t have to deal with the struggle of sleeping and waking up early.

images-12

4) Be confident and happy to return to school.

Many people get nervous before the start of a new school year and it’s completely understandable, especially if you’re starting at a new school. But, if you make yourself think that going back to school isn’t a big deal and tackle it with a smile upon your face, it will make the overall journey of returning to school a whole lot easier.

5) Stay calm and don’t freak out.

As previously mentioned, people get really nervous on their first day back but just try to stay calm throughout the day. If you do get in a messy situation, don’t have a mental breakdown; stay calm and collected and think of a reasonable way do deal with any issues.

Peeling the Paint Off and DIY crafts

Difficulty Level : Pay a little attention. That’s all. We never outgrew painting, did we? It is so tempting to either paint something all by ourselves or smearing a new layer over the existing one. However enticing, it would help to remember the advisory that comes associated even with this simple job. For example, your new layer of paint can bubble or flake and peeling the old layer off might be a risk. This can leave your fresh paint looking uneven and streaky if you do not strip and prepare the surface that needs to be painted. There is no reason to worry. Stripping the paint is simple enough but it needs time and care. Read on to develop an idea about what needs to be done. Things you’ll need:

  1. One dust mask

2.Paint-stripping chemicals 3.One heat gun 4.One paintbrush 5.Scourer 6.Rubber gloves 7.Goggles 8.Soapy water 9.Sponge 10.Scraper How to go about it?

  • Pour some paint-stripping chemical into a vessel and use an old paintbrush to dab it onto the surface that needs to be painted. If it is wood you want to paint, make sure that you do not soak it.

  • Let the chemical be, for some time, then the old paint should become easier to be scrapped off. You can use the wallpaper scraper but make sure that you are not too vigorous or else you might damage the surface. For the smaller or trickier areas like corners and curves, you may use some steel wool. If some rough areas still remain, you can use a sandpaper or belt sander to smoothen them out as much as possible.

  • Clean the surface with soapy water and sponge to remove the paint-stripper and errant flakes of old paint or sawdust. Basically, you will get a smooth finish to begin painting.

Tricks of the trade: 1. Read-up a little and know the surface you will be working on, to avoid mistakes. For example, you should not use steel wool to strip paint off the oak for it will leave marks. 2. A chisel can come handy if you are looking to clean the corners of a wall.

  1. Floorboards can do with a little talcum or chalk powder to reduce the friction.

A word of caution: Paint flakes or sawdust can easily mingle with the air. Make sure that you are working in a well-ventilated area, to begin with. We prefer to advise that you work outside. Oh, and keep that dust-mask on. Those goggles too, if you do not want the paint in your eyes.

The Cardboard Box and DIY crafts

Seriously… when your toddler wakes up with the look of the Devil in his eyes… what do you do? Put him in a cardboard box with some crayons. Amen, Hallelujah. I saw this idea on Pinterest awhile back and thought it was “cute”, but for real- this was thought up by a creative stressed out mama (or an artistic one;)

Today just started off wrong. I’m sure everyone’s had those days, but holy cow. 5:30 AM on the dot, this kid was rearing and ready to destroy. Turns out, he just had to poop, but until that happened… this cardboard box deal= life saver! Turned out to be a pretty nice opportunity to snap some shots, too ^_^.

Honestly, I can’t even remember what life was like before Elijah. What on earth did I take pictures of? Obviously none of it was as beautiful as this tiny human I created, that’s for sure. I can’t help but to admire his tiny features. He has so much of his daddy in him, and occasionally I see a glimpse of myself- but really.. he’s his own little person.

Who would have thunk it, a card board box and crayons… This boy was happier than a bird with a french fry. Not necessarily because he understood that he was allowed to draw on things, but because he’s perfecting his fine little motor skills… ( so he CAN draw on things.. like walls and cupboards… *shuddering at the thought*) Thank God for chalk paint! :))
