Chalk it up to good luck and DIY crafts

You know that awkward space above the sink, below your upper cabinets? The one that always gets splashed with dirty sink water and that you dream of having enough money to put in a fancy back splash? Ya, we all have them and they don’t look nice but you really don’t want to put up a nice picture for fear that it would get ruined. Well, I’ve found a solution!

A homemade, DIY, chalkboard that is perfect for writing notes, weekly menus, and drawing fun, chalk pictures!

This chalkboard was made with just a piece of plywood, about 12 ft of baseboard, and some chalkboard paint.

1-Materials

My house does not have a great place for cutting wood indoors so I work outside on the patio. Luckily it was a warm day!

2-Cutting

I am pretty excited about having bought my first miter box! I feel all grown up, and just look at how perfect that line is!

3-Pieces

I managed to cut three of the four pieces that I needed before I realized I had not bought enough wood. Oops! I guess I didn’t account for the length that I would lose when I cut the diagonal pieces. So back to the hardware store for me! But in the meantime, it’s spray painting time.

4-Paint

I used Rust-Oleum Spray Chalkboard paint and I really liked the way it covered. It ended up being just the right amount of paint for about 4 coats on my board.

5-Wood

First, make sure to cut the piece to the right size. If you cut it after painting you will end up wasting some paint.

6-Painting

Cover a large area with a plastic sheet or newspaper because the spray paint really makes a mess!

7-Grain

I actually really like how the wood grain shows through the paint.

8-Painted

After the wood had about 3 coats of paint on it (you can do each coat very quickly after each other) bring it in to attach the frame on.

9-Splotched

To attach the wood, first I used a little bit of white glue to roughly stick each piece on before using some very small finishing nails. I made sure to have some small pieces of wood underneath so that the nails didn’t damage the floor under my project. Then I hammered a small nail in to the end of each piece.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an Amy project without a small goof. You can see in the top left corner that I managed to splotch a bunch of white glue on the chalk board. Oh well, nothing, a bit more chalk board paint can’t fix!

11-Taped

So I taped up the white trim with some painters tape (not as difficult as it looks, I assure you) so that I could repaint the inner chalk board.

12-Painting

And applied more chalk board paint! I nearly ran out of paint on this coat but had just enough to cover it.

13-Quark

Quark wasn’t too happy with how much attention I was giving to my project while ignoring her so I figured I had to include a photo of her getting in the way or she may riot.

16-Imperfect

Of course, it’s not completely perfect, but I’m still proud of it! Maybe next time I would take a little more care with the corners and put the nails in a place where I could hammer them in more fully.

14-Finished

Finished! It fits in the space just perfectly and it looks much nicer than it did before.

15-Before

When I do my full kitchen renovation I will actually lift the chalkboard up and nail it to the wall so there is no space between the top of the chalkboard and the bottom of the cabinet.

Until then, I’m pretty darn pleased with it!
