How to Make Ornaments from Wine Corks

By Aletheir Hanson

Last Christmas season I went to Lucky Star Market at Prairie Moon Winery here in Ames. At the market I stumbled across these adorable ornaments made out of old wine corks and bought a few. This season, I decided to try and see if I could remake the unique pieces.

What you need:

  • Wine corks (saving in advance or buy them at a craft store)

  • Pipe cleaners (optional)

  • Paint, paint brushes, black fine-point Sharpie, beads

  • Q-tips, toothpicks, a thicker pin

  • Wire (Make sure the wire is thin enough to go through the beads), wire cutters

  • Hot glue gun

1. To start off, pick a wine cork and paint on the white part of the eyes and either the pink lips or white teeth. You can also draw on the nose with the black Sharpie.

2. After the paint is dry, outline both the lips and eyes, create eyelashes, and pupils.

3. Poke the side of the wine cork with the pin needle and dig in the wire with beads already on. The wire should be roughly four inches to fit a tree branch in between.

-For extra strength, glue the area where the wire is going into the cork

And wa-la! You now have some unique ornaments!
