In class, we learned about a Wunderkammer and were assigned to go to the Natural History museum to take pictures and translate them into a digital Wunderkammer. From class discussions, my impression of a Wunderkammer is a collection of objects that have undefined rules on how things are arranged and organized. With the idea of a collection in mind, I knew to explore the entomology area, hall of minerals, hall of African/North American wildlife, and botany hall. I first went through the mineral hall but I felt there wasn’t enough description for the rocks. I then headed for the dinosaur exhibit and walked to the discovery basecamp for fun.
As I was exploring the boxes that were provided, I realized it was similar to a Wunderkammer in a way where you interact and touch items. The box I decided to photograph was a sea star one because the items in it were interesting– containing books, pamphlets, and starfishes packed inside. Later, I had fun in the back area where people can take flashlights and inspect dark exhibits. Similar to a Wunderkammer, one has to explore and look at things in different angles. However, it’s not possible to capture the dark exhibit’s essence with a camera—rather one has to be present for the experience.
The rest of the pictures were clearly collections so I didn’t have a problem taking pictures; I chose my favorite three. I then needed to upload them onto Tumblr and Pinterest. As a new user of Pinterest, I started with that media out of curiosity. I downloaded an app for it and edited and uploaded my pictures quite easily. Afterwards, I visited categories that were recommended when I first signed up for the account because I had no idea what keywords to type in. I ended up pinning mostly artworks and gardening. I’m still not familiar in all aspects of Pinterest (esp. the DIY stuff and shopping).
For Tumblr, I was acquainted with it and started personalizing my page and account. I enjoy that I have the freedom to change and add many things: background image, font size, web layout, etc. I approached my findings through searching keywords. However searching through the posts were challenging because they were mostly random (though it’s worth it when I find a good post). I also enjoy the gifs in Tumblr since it feels more visually appealing.
My expectations of a digital Wunderkammer would be to have similar concepts such as exploration and a certain organization. Pinterest and Tumblr definitely both get the job done though Pinterest seems more practical in a sense. Practical since posts are prevalent when searching key words; there is an ability to organize pins in certain folders. My impression of a Wunderkammer is something that is mostly impractical but meaningful. Tumblr seems to fit the description more because it’s mostly filled with random things but to Tumblr users some of the posts are gold.
