DIY Wedding Makeup and DIY crafts

I have been doing a lot of research on DIY wedding items lately and while I was initially looking for crafts, many day-of topics came up as well. So, I thought it would be worth sharing something that worked well for me. I am by no means a makeup artist but I did my own wedding makeup and it turned out just how I wanted. Here are a couple reasons why I chose to do this:

  • Save money

  • Force myself to learn how to do my makeup for other special events

  • Have one less vendor to worry about organizing the day of my wedding

  • Create a look that feels like myself – so many times you hear that someone had their makeup done professionally for a wedding or event and they hated it, they didn’t feel like themselves

Two things I cannot stress enough… invest in some good makeup and practice, practice, practice.

Here is what I did and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I went to Sephora and had them do a basic makeover. What this means is that they do your makeup and recommend some products you can pick up that day. They will ask you questions about how you want to look and get your input on color preferences along the way. Make sure you tell them that you want to watch their technique because you are planning on doing it yourself at your wedding and they will walk you through a lot of the steps. For example, I wanted smoky eyes but had never done it myself and frankly, I was scared of looking like a raccoon on my wedding day. They were great about talking me through it.

Disclaimer: The makeover is free, but you have to have a minimum $50 purchase in Sephora that day. Even so, you still save money because you will have that makeup for months after your wedding. I am still using the colors I purchased almost a year after my wedding. Plus, it is far better than your average drugstore makeup quality.

Finally, as I mentioned before… practice, practice, practice! Take pictures of your face after you leave Sephora from many angles, including one with your eyes closed. And, now that you have the supplies to create it, practice re-creating at least once a month. Even with pictures, if you don’t practice, you are not going to be able to re-create it magically on your wedding day when you have a million other things to think about. Here are some examples of my process:

If makeup is not your forte and you don’t think you can practice up to the level you want to be it, by all means, hire a makeup artist. Also, if it is going to be too stressful to think about on your wedding, don’t go that route. I am all about minimizing the things to worry about and stress level on your wedding day – 110%. For me, that meant not having to worry about one more vendor.
