Jaclyn Wayser and DIY crafts

Constructing my digital wunderkammer has been an interesting process. The five objects I chose to photograph for the first assignment were all randomly chosen from my room. I wasn’t exactly sure where I wanted to go with my wunderkammer so my strategy in the museum was to take pictures of nearly everything I found interesting. By process of elimination I came up with three seemingly random objects. At this point I still didn’t have a steady direction on where I was going with my theme. As I looked at all the items I selected I started to finally figure out a theme. I realized that my Pinterest board and Tumblr page were filled with objects/images that were taken our of their normal context of meaning. They are still recognizable as what they are intended to be, but each object or image is distorted in a way to some obscure or abstract portrayal. Once I realized this more heterotopic theme, I had no idea where to go from there when searching for images because it is a refined category to search. I began searching Pinterest and Tumblr for tags such as “abstract, modern art, weird objects,” etc. and eventually found a bunch of images. Tumblr offered me a more creative background while Pinterest felt like it had a more commodified vibe (for example when searching for modern art on Pinterest pieces of modern art that could be purchased popped up while on Tumblr the art itself came up more as a result). I found tumblr to be more applicable to my wunderkammer, but I may also be biased because I am an avid Tumblr user and only use Pinterest once in awhile.
