Whipped Coconut Oil Lotion Using a Spoon and DIY crafts

IMG_9660 Can applying oil cause acne-prone skin to breakout and would it clog pores? I personally used to use harsh face washes to strip the face from any natural oils in hopes of clearing away acne. Back then, Proactiv was a popular product advertised to clear acne by drying out the natural oils on the skin. Maybe most of you have noticed that products like these don’t improve our skin in the long-term. The truth is our skin has a layer of acid mantle that acts as a barrier against bacteria that causes acne. When the skin is extremely dry, the skin reacts by producing excessive oil (sebum) to attempt to rebuild this barrier. Skin stripping causes acne because of bacteria and excessive sebum production. Applying natural oils actually protects the skin by preventing moisture from evaporating away. Unlike popular belief, most oils are actually easily absorbed, non-greasy, and work well with all types of skin. Sephora-Favorites-Beauty-Oil-Essentials-Limited-Edition-2013-image-source-sephora-1 Oils became a popular skincare product on makeup counters. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, for example, has awesome reviews and became very popular. Josie Maran’s argan oil is another good example. When asking a Sephora salesperson what product would both moisturize the skin and prevent acne, we wouldn’t be surprised if she recommends Josie’s product as one of the choices.I’ve read numerous articles on how coconut oil can be beneficial to the skin. There are also tons of Youtube videos that talk about its benefits. We can get into the health benefits later in this blog post, but coconut oil can not only moisturize the skin but blocks 20% of sunrays. It is a natural sunscreen. 43671033897933775721AmazingHealthBenefitsofCoconutOil-2 How to choose your coconut oil: When looking for a coconut oil in the supermarket, you may encounter many different types: cold-pressed, expeller-pressed, unrefined, refined. The best one is cold-pressed unrefined. We want the coconut oil in its purist form and cold-pressed unrefined coconut retains natural flavor and nutrients. I got my coconut oil from Whole Foods, but you can also purchase the same one through Amazon. I love using coconut oil as a body butter after showering, on my hair, and on my face as a moisturizer. However, as you’ll notice, coconut oil at room temperature is completely solid and hard to spread on large surfaces. My metal spoon sticks straight up as I dug it into the container: IMG_9642 To make it spreadable, a lot of people use a hand mixer to mix up the oil into a cream consistency. However I didn’t have a hand mixer and found that hand mixing can produce the same results with just a little more hard work. It is not too bad since we can mix in small batches whenever we need the coconut cream and also not have to wash a heavy hand mixer. Take a few “chunks” with a metal spoon and scoop it into a small dish. IMG_9663 Mix and beat the coconut oil until it becomes more like a cream. It is best to mix up and down and side to side instead of in circles. This makes it so much faster. Not to be too off topic, but I was watching a whipped cream beating competition on Masterchef and the winner was indeed mixing up and down and side to side. This just covers more surface area in a small amount of time. Use the oil on your hair to protect them from sun damage, on your face as a moisturizer, and on your body as a natural body cream. IMG_9659 Leftovers? Eat it. Did you know that eating a tablespoon of coconut oil a day can actually help you lose weight by reducing abdominal fat? It was once believed that saturated fats clog the arteries, but this is just a myth. In fact coconut oil has mostly saturated fat. Populations that eat a lot of coconut as part of their regular diet are among the healthiest people on the planet. It… – Kills hunger and makes you want to eat less – Kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi – Improves blood cholesterol and prevents heart disease – Has therapeutic effect on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s I like to spread coconut oil on toasties and strawberries. The brioche toasts are very fragrant and crunchy and I get them from Trader Joe’s. IMG_9644 IMG_9651 There are many ways you can use coconut. Be creative and when in doubt, check out other blogs, forums, videos on the web for ideas.
