How to Save Money When Shopping and DIY crafts

Shopping can cause a serious dent in your wallet. With so many trends going in and out of style, it can be hard to keep up! If you’re someone who loves to shop but has trouble finding good deals, these tips are great for you.

Get rid of clothes you don’t wear: If it’s been sitting in your closet for a year, there’s a good chance that you’ll never wear it again. Go through your clothes and donate them or give them to a consignment shop. Another great tip is to have closet swapping parties with your friends. Gather the clothes you don’t wear and trade.

Re-purpose old clothing: Upcycle your clothing and use it for something new. There are literally endless amounts of DIY projects you can take on with your old clothes. Scroll through Pinterest to inspire yourself.

Shop out of season: I know it may seem weird buying a swimsuit in the winter or a sweater in the summer, but the season will come back around eventually. Out of season clothing is usually on sale so stock up on your winter or summer essentials while it’s cheap! Once that season rolls around again, you’ll thank your past self for going ahead and making the purchase.

Go thrifting: Macklemore would be proud. If you have never thrifted before – try it! You’ll be surprised at the gems you’ll find. You can find some seriously cool stuff in thrift stores and the best part is that it’s all affordable. Plus, everything you find will be unique. Thrift stores are a great place to shop for accessories too. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Look up coupons or online promo codes: Pay special attention to the marketing when you go into a store. What types of sales or deals are being advertised? Ask a sales associate what kinds of deals are going on that week or if they offer any discounts (such as military or student). Look up coupons before you shop as well. If you’re shopping online, be sure to search for any promo codes that may be available.

Don’t spend too much $$ on trendy items: Trends come and go. Spend your dollars on classic pieces that will always be in style like jeans, a basic brown or black bag, simple heels, etc. Spend less money on trendier items that will end up going out of style.

Shop at discount stores: Stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls are my go to. They usually carry overstocked and slightly imperfect pieces from other retailers at a cheaper price. These stores are also great for household items too. Just be sure to look over the item for quality before you buy.

Make a list: Instead of blindly going to the mall because you’re bored or because you just feel like shopping, use it as an opportunity to buy pieces you actually need. Before you shop, take a look through your closet. Do you have a top that you can’t seem to find anything to go with it? Or, maybe it’s a skirt that you haven’t worn simply because you don’t know what to wear with it? Make a list of things you need to buy and you’ll save yourself from a closet full of random pieces. Other items to put on the list are things that are getting worn out or that you’re running low on.

There are times where we feel slightly guilty after shopping, but you’ll never have to experience buyer’s remorse again when you follow these tips. When you feel like you scored a good deal, it makes you feel accomplished of your purchases.
